“Thank you for coming all this way, Adela. If you don’t mind, why don’t you have dinner with us?”
Catherine took the gift and offered the invitation with a polite smile.
Adela’s face lit up. “I’d love to. Is Lance joining too?”
Both of them turned to Lance.
He had just sat down and mentioned he had work to finish, so Catherine figured he wouldn’t come. Adela was just being polite by asking.
But then Lance checked his watch, took off his glasses, and stood up.
“Let’s go together. Thanks for making the trip, Adela.”
He grabbed his jacket and walked over.
It caught Catherine off guard. Bumping into Adela at the office was a surprise, having dinner with her was a surprise, and Lance deciding to come was an even bigger surprise.
Without a word, Catherine walked out. The moment she got in the elevator, she started looking for a restaurant. She lucked out, finding one last private room at a nearby five-star hotel.
Once they were outside, Lance reached out his hand to her.
Catherine handed him the car keys right away.
Lance drove. Catherine and Adela sat in the backseat.
“You all get along so well, with the same outlook and so much to talk about,” Adela said, smiling after seeing how Catherine just knew Lance wanted the keys. Their easy understanding amazed her.
Catherine gave a small smile. “If you spend enough time with someone, you start to know them pretty well.”
“Have you two ever…” Adela stopped herself, suddenly remembering. “Oh, right. Lance is getting married soon, isn’t he?”
Lance let out a quiet “Yeah.”
Adela tried to lighten the mood. “Lance is young and successful. I bet plenty of women like him. Getting married early just makes sense.”
