The Best Revenge It Wasn't Even Your Child novel Chapter 381

“You already know?”

Lance caught the hint in Aaron’s voice right away. The guy definitely knew more than he was letting on.

Aaron shook his head, only to realize a second later that Lance couldn’t see him.

“I was just... curious, that’s all. Why do you want to know?”

Lance’s mind wandered for a moment to Catherine, the way she used to curl up in his arms, so peaceful and soft, her hair spilling over his shirt while her fingers played with his buttons. Every memory of her made his chest tighten.

“Curiosity killed the cat,” he said, then ended the call.

Aaron knew exactly what that meant: keep digging. He’d stalled once already, but this time there was no getting out of it.

And as for Catherine...

He could only apologize to her in his heart. She was on her own now.

Catherine barely ate at dinner.

When she got home, Lorinda had left her a late-night snack, still warm. She started eating as soon as she walked in, her phone open to Lorinda’s livestream. Every so often, she’d drop a comment in the chat, keeping the conversation lively.

Then a message popped up at the top of her screen. It was Adela. They’d just added each other on WeChat earlier.

[Sorry for leaving so suddenly today. Next time, let’s have dinner again. I know another place with amazing food.]

Catherine replied, [That’s very kind of you, Adela.]

Her tone was polite, almost stiff.

Adela asked, [Did you like the food today?]

Catherine typed, [Lance really enjoyed it. Thank you for having us, Adela.]

Anyone else in Adela’s social circle probably would’ve stopped replying, maybe even felt insulted by how formal Catherine sounded.

But Adela kept chatting, asking about everything from the appetizers to dessert.

Catherine kept her answers short and safe. “Yes, it was good. You’re right. Tasted nice.”

By the time the conversation finally ended, her late-night snack was cold.
