Harrell shook his head. “No way. When Lance married her, he was the hottest guy in the business scene. Every woman wanted a shot at him.”
“I…” Lorinda started, her eyes darting to Catherine in desperation. She was out of excuses and had no idea how to fix this.
Catherine jumped in, keeping her tone light. “It’s true, Lance was amazing. I was lucky, honestly. But we’re divorced now, so there’s really no point in digging all this up. Let’s just leave it.”
She grabbed Lorinda’s arm and pulled her away.
Harrell stayed on the steps, watching them walk off. He pulled out his phone, typed a quick message, and sent it to Lance.
...
The whole situation killed Catherine’s appetite.
“I swear, I didn’t know he was right behind us. If I had, there’s no way I would’ve said any of that,” Lorinda said, picking at her food and looking miserable. “It’s all on me. I knew Harrell was working at this hospital, but I still couldn’t keep my mouth shut.”
“If you really feel guilty about it, maybe talk to Harrell later. Ask him not to go telling Lance anything crazy,” Catherine said.
Her relationship with Lance wasn’t just bad. It was a total mess. Not good, not exactly terrible, just complicated. And it felt like the smallest thing could make it all worse.
“He’s coming by this afternoon to check on Jasper anyway. Let’s eat fast so we can get back,” Lorinda said, speeding up.
Catherine put down her chopsticks. “Grab something for Alexa to take back with her. I’m heading home for now. I’ll bring you all dinner tonight.”
She was so tired she felt like she could sleep for days. A nap at home sounded perfect.
“Go ahead, hurry up,” Lorinda said, waving her off.
Catherine took the subway, got home, cleaned up a little, and went straight to bed. When she opened her eyes again, it was already after four in the afternoon.
She cooked a few dishes and made some soup to bring to the hospital.
Jasper’s fever was gone, and he looked a lot more lively. The little guy played quietly in his stroller while the three women sat around the coffee table, sharing dinner.
