“So, you’re really just letting it go?” Gavin glanced at her belly. “You’re about to have a baby. You’ll need every penny.”
“There’s nothing left in Amanda’s account. She probably moved the money out, worried someone would find out. It’s fine. Let her keep it for the kids. Lorinda and I still have some savings. It’s enough to get me through until the baby comes.”
Catherine honestly couldn’t believe Amanda could burn through that much cash so fast. Both she and Lorinda figured Amanda must have just hidden the money somewhere, planning to keep supporting the orphanage behind the scenes.
Gavin let out a breath. “You’re just too soft-hearted. With all those kids at the orphanage, I don’t think you’ll ever be able to walk away. You’ll keep helping them, won’t you?”
Catherine didn’t respond.
“You’re about to be a mom yourself. You should be saving up for you and your baby…”
He shook his head. Gavin never really got Catherine. Not deep down.
“I grew up in an orphanage. Death and goodbyes are what I remember most.” Catherine’s voice was calm, but her eyes lost some of their brightness. “Most of those kids are sick. Even the healthy ones, growing up in a place like that, are way more likely to develop problems later. Mental health stuff.”
“Life only happens once. I want them to have a chance to leave, to see the world outside. Some of the kids have healthy minds but bodies that won’t cooperate. They’re in pain, but they want to live… all of them do.”
Gavin’s heart thudded in his chest. It was like he was seeing a whole new world, one he’d never even thought about. He’d always seen people as either rich or poor. He’d never thought about healthy or sick.
“Listening to you… I feel like an idiot for how much I’ve wasted over the years.”
Catherine took a steady breath and kept dabbing medicine on his leg. “It’s not wrong to enjoy life when you can. Just don’t waste it all. If you can help those kids, do it. Sometimes a little help can completely change someone’s future.”
The medicine was cool against Gavin’s skin, with a sting underneath. He looked down, watching Catherine’s hands moving gently. His heart beat once, then twice, then faster and faster.
