The Best Revenge It Wasn't Even Your Child novel Chapter 576

From a practical perspective, Belinda saw it clearly: Lance couldn’t be separated from Lanny, not even for a moment.

Still clad in nothing but a pair of house slippers, Lance was summarily shown the door. His first call was to Aaron for a ride—but Aaron’s car broke down halfway there.

So Aaron called Catherine.

It was early morning. Catherine had just finished getting ready when Aaron’s call came in. He sent over an address—it was the James family’s Eldervale property. Catherine recognized it; she had personally arranged for Belinda to stay there during one of her visits.

“Didn’t Lance drive himself over?” she asked.

There was a racket of honking and engines from Aaron’s end. “I don’t really know what happened,” he said, tension in his voice. “He just called out of the blue, told me to get over there right away. Must be serious. Catherine, you need to go. Weather report says a big storm’s on the way!”

Eldervale’s miserable weather was enough to make anyone curse.

“Understood,” she replied, ending the call. After handing Lanny off to Susan and Alexa, Catherine grabbed her keys and headed out.

Half an hour later, she pulled her car to a stop a short way from the address. She didn’t get out right away, reaching for her phone instead to call Lance. As she lifted her head, her gaze drifted outside—and she caught sight of Sarah and Adelina.

Adelina had come with her mother but didn't have the nerve to actually go inside. Sarah had left the house already; she wiped her eyes, her features quickly smoothing into composure. She had to be strong for her daughter. After comforting Adelina, the two stayed outside, planning to wait until Lance left so they could speak privately to Belinda. Sure, Lance had treated them with a modicum of civility and kept his distance, but in their eyes, he was still colder, less forgiving than Belinda. Belinda could talk tough, but rarely acted on it. Lance gave people room on the surface, but cross him and he’d turn on you without warning.

Mother and daughter waited anxiously under the colonnade at the villa’s entrance, watching for any sign of Lance. Sarah gave Adelina her word—there was still hope for joining the James family. So right now, anticipation lit up Adelina’s face, and she seemed almost buoyant.

Catherine’s thumb hovered over Lance’s contact for a moment, then paused. After several beats, she started the engine again and steered her car into the gated drive.

When she reached the villa, she found Lance waiting at the door. He stood in a crisp white shirt, rain falling in a fine, misty veil that lent him a brooding air. The house slippers on his feet stood out—ludicrously at odds with his otherwise elegant presence—yet somehow, the entire impression was impossible to forget.
