“Grandma and Grandpa have been talking about you nonstop,” Sophia said, her eyes lighting up. “Now that I’ve finally got you, I’m calling in for time off. We’re going home right now!”

Honestly, Sophia would totally do that.

Catherine reached out and grabbed her arm. “It’s the end of the year. The company’s super busy. If you ask for leave now, it might hurt your chances of getting a permanent position.”

“Catherine, just come with me, please? Just for a little while? I’m begging you.”

It was impossible to say no to Sophia when she begged like that. Catherine sighed. “Alright, we’ll go tonight, okay?”

Her marriage to Lance had been pretty much flawless, except for one thing. He never loved her.

When Lance suggested they keep their marriage a secret, she thought they’d have to hide it from everyone, even his family. But as soon as they got their marriage certificate, he brought her straight home to meet them.

Lance’s dad hadn’t been happy that his son acted without telling anyone first, but he didn’t make a big fuss. His mom never really accepted Catherine, but she didn’t cause trouble either, just stayed distant and cold.

Ableson and Fiona, though, treated her like their own. Every week when she joined them for dinner, she could actually feel what it was like to have family care about her.

Now she was leaving. She’d probably never come back. Stopping by to see Ableson and Fiona one last time felt right. A real goodbye. Besides, Lance wasn’t even around.

“Really?” Sophia had called and texted her so many times, but Catherine always refused to visit the James Estate. “You’re not just teasing me, are you?”

Catherine smiled, fixing the bow on Sophia’s blouse. “Have I ever lied to you?”

Right after she said it, guilt settled in her chest. She never lied, not really, but the one secret she was keeping from Lance was a whopper. The kind of thing that could blow up her life if it ever got out.

“Awesome! I’m calling Grandma and Grandpa right now!”

Sophia was so sweet, so clueless sometimes. She didn’t get that now Catherine and Lance were divorced, she really shouldn’t be going back to the James family like nothing happened.
