"Does the family know about any of this?"
Charlotte had just closed her eyes when the thought struck her, and she immediately opened them again.
"They have no idea," Anthony replied with a reassuring smile. "Just sleep. You don't need to worry about anything else."
If they knew...
The entire world would have probably been turned upside down by now.
Meanwhile, in the adjacent room.
As the anesthesia finally wore off, Tansy slowly fluttered her eyes open.
As if violently pulled from a nightmare, the very first words out of her mouth were a desperate gasp: "Donald... my son."
"You're awake?"
Seeing her bolt up in a panic, Donald immediately leaned over, his eyes overflowing with relief. "Lottie took the bullet out. It's going to hurt for a bit."
The scent of antiseptics grounded her.
Tansy looked down and saw her left shoulder heavily bandaged, rendering her arm immobile.
"Hector..."
Seeing Donald right beside her, her immediate panic shifted to her boy.
"He's perfectly fine." Donald gently pressed her back against the pillows, soothing her. "He was a little shaken up, but he ate and went straight to sleep."
"Really?"
Tansy stared at Donald through a haze of tears, almost terrified to believe it. "We really didn't die?"
"We're alive."
Donald's voice cracked. He gently cupped her pale face, his thumb stroking her cheek. "Tansy, I'm so sorry. Four years ago, I..."
"I never blamed you."
Tansy weakly grasped his hand, forcing a fragile smile. "Four years ago, I was to blame, too."
Her father had ordered her to use her beauty to seduce Donald, to drag him down into their criminal underworld.
But as they spent time together, she realized what an honorable man he truly was.
She was trapped in a swamp of darkness, and she couldn't bear to corrupt a man so pure.
"When did you find out you were pregnant?"
"A week after you left," Tansy recalled softly.
"Did you ever consider... not keeping him?"
