Twin Cupids at Work Daddy Come Home novel Chapter 457

A long silence stretched between them.

Brenda swallowed hard, her voice trembling as she looked away from Madeline. “Madeline, he’s getting out soon. If I spend the rest of my life making it up to him, will that be enough?”

Madeline said nothing.

Brenda took another drag on her cigarette, a sad smile tugging at her lips. “Probably not, right?”

There was no answer. How could she answer that? The man had chosen it himself, and he did it for her. Ten years. How many decades does anyone really get? And this was supposed to be the best one.

That night was bitterly cold. They talked for hours, not moving until their hands and feet were numb. Only then did their emotions finally settle and they headed back inside.

It was already four in the morning. Brenda crashed in Madeline’s room and fell asleep almost instantly. Madeline stood for a while on the balcony, staring down at the street. Julian was still there, like he planned to wait until daylight.

She watched his shadow for a long time, lost in thought. There was no hope for her anymore.

The sun finally came up. Its rays landed on the man who’d waited all night, but they didn’t bring any warmth.

Madeline hadn’t managed to fall asleep until five, so she was still out cold. Brenda was the type who couldn’t wake up without an alarm, so of course, they both overslept.

Julian waited downstairs until eight thirty. When no one showed, he figured she was avoiding him, maybe even hiding on purpose.

He stubbed out his cigarette, got in his car, and drove off.

When Madeline finally woke up, Brenda was still snuggled under her blanket, dead to the world. Madeline thought of Julian and, almost without thinking, rushed to the balcony to look for him.

He was gone.

She couldn’t really describe how she felt. Restless, maybe. Frustrated. She shook Brenda awake, and after they got themselves together, they headed to the office.

It was like Brenda had left all her sadness behind overnight. By the time they walked into the company, she seemed like a whole new person. Linking arms with Madeline, she grinned and asked, “So, when did Julian leave last night?”

“You mean he stayed out there the whole time?”

“Probably. Bet he turned into an ice sculpture and got hauled away by the city workers.”
