At the sound of her sharp voice, the men instantly bowed their heads, looking terrified. “Miss, it’s you.”
Madeline’s heart jumped.
So she’d been right. Everything suddenly made sense. This was that person’s house, and the one who’d kidnapped her looked just like her.
She simply nodded.
Better to say less. She had no idea how her double normally acted or spoke, so she kept her words short, turned around, and walked ahead. Only then did she let out a quiet sigh of relief.
Madeline was just about to keep searching for an exit when a hand suddenly shot out from a nearby room.
Before she could react, she was yanked inside. Instinct took over. Madeline’s grip tightened on her knife and she moved to stab, but the other person was ready, catching her hand in a firm grip.
“Shh. If you want to survive, keep your mouth shut.”
Madeline glared at the blond man who had clamped a hand over her mouth.
“Stay quiet, and I’ll let go.”
She nodded, and he released her.
The next second, she kneed him hard between the legs.
“Shit!”
Without missing a beat, Madeline swept his legs out from under him and sent him crashing down. She pressed her knife to his throat.
The man clutched his groin, breathing hard. Luckily for him, he’d managed to block the worst of it, or she would have done some real damage.
He glanced up at her, eyes strikingly pretty and full of exasperation. “So much for keeping promises, huh?”
As he shifted, Madeline heard a metallic clinking. She looked down and saw an iron shackle locked around his ankle, the chain just long enough for him to move around the room.
“Who are you?” Madeline asked, brows drawn tight.
He raised an eyebrow, then laced his hands behind his head and lounged on the floor as if nothing had happened. “Don’t worry about who I am. What matters is you’re not her.”
