No one hated her more than he did. Five years ago, she’d put on that face and pretended to be Madeline, causing Helene’s child’s death. Now, five years later, she was pulling the same trick, hurting his mother and framing Madeline again. This woman was nothing but trouble. She was infuriating.
Maxwell’s face turned dark. He raised his voice. “Guards, stop them, now!”
The Ballard family’s guards weren’t the type to back down. They stepped forward, quickly forming a tense standoff. The air was thick with tension, everyone on edge.
Maxwell looked seriously at Julian. “Mr. Grayson, the person you’re trying to harm is a Ballard family member. Are you really trying to go against us?”
“Ms. Ballard?” Julian’s eyes grew cold as he glanced at the woman next to him. On his way here, he’d already learned the whole story. Madeline had been brought back because she looked so much like her mother, who had once belonged to the Ballard family. Madeline had told him before that someone had tried to steal her life, wanting everything she had, just because she was almost unimaginably rich. The Ballards were the wealthiest around, so it all made sense now.
Madeline was the real daughter, and this imposter was here to stir up chaos and take her place.
Julian’s gaze sharpened, his voice frosty. “Can’t you see what’s right in front of you?”
Maxwell frowned, clearly frustrated. “Mr. Grayson, this is the Ballard family’s business. We can handle our own problems. I’d appreciate it if you stayed out of it.”
“My wife was hurt in your house. There’s no way I’m just standing by.”
Maxwell felt a headache coming on. Everyone knew how powerful the Graysons were in the Capital. The Ballard family didn’t even have their matriarch here. It was just a handful of old men left to protect the family, and there was no way they could afford to make the Graysons their enemies.
Maxwell tried reasoning. “Mr. Grayson, these two ladies look identical. How can you be sure which one is your wife?”
Julian let out a short laugh. “If I can’t even recognize my own wife, what use am I? Someone can copy another person all they want, but no matter how perfect the imitation, their disgusting true nature doesn’t change.”
The meaning was clear. He saw right through the other ‘Madeline’.
