He had barely finished speaking before a voice, dripping with sarcasm, floated out from the living room. “Well, look who finally decided to show up. Julian.”

Madeline and Julian both looked over. A middle-aged man stood beside Julian’s grandfather, casual but clearly sizing them up.

Madeline recognized him from her wedding. It was Julian’s uncle, Matthew. After Julian’s father’s accident, Matthew had done everything he could to grab the position of family head. But Christian never thought Matthew was fit to lead. In his eyes, Julian was the only real choice.

Matthew had always complained that Christian played favorites, but Christian never gave in to his whining. Instead, he kicked Matthew and his family out of the main house and sent them to another city to manage a branch of Grayson Enterprises.

Now, with Matthew suddenly back, it was obvious what Christian was doing. He wanted to let Julian know that he wasn’t the only heir. If Julian kept pushing back, Christian could easily bring in some competition.

Madeline could see Christian’s motives as clear as day. Julian, of course, understood them even better.

But Julian just raised his eyebrow, face unreadable, acting like Matthew didn’t even matter.
