At the hospital, Lucy lay in her room while two caregivers fussed quietly around her. When someone knocked, she answered, but as soon as the door swung open and she saw who it was, her face clouded over.
“What are you doing here?” Lucy’s voice was cold, her eyes fixed on Madeline.
Madeline didn’t look away. “I came to see you.”
At that, Lucy’s eyes flashed with anger. She let out a sharp, bitter laugh. “See me? Or just checking to see if I’m still alive?”
Her glare slid over to Julian. She’d already heard about how he’d stood up for Madeline, but never in a million years did she expect him to take Madeline’s side against his own mother. For a woman, he was willing to throw away his reputation and his family.
Maybe Christian was right. Julian could have any woman he wanted, but he should never let himself get so caught up in just one.
“Mom, what happened isn’t what you think,” Julian said, letting out a long breath.
Lucy didn’t buy it for a second. Her stare sharpened, icy and unyielding.
“Is that so? Well, I can’t stop you from making excuses for her. Take her and get out. I don’t want to see either of you right now.”
Madeline stepped forward. “Mrs. Grayson, I came because I want to explain.”
“There’s nothing to explain.”
“You saw me with a knife, but why would I stab you? What would I possibly get out of that?”
“You said it yourself, didn’t you? You hate me. You wanted revenge for your child.”
Madeline pressed her lips together for a moment. “If I was after revenge, why wouldn’t I go after Helene? Why would Ihurt you instead, then leave every piece of evidence out in the open, like I want everyone to know it’s me? Am I really trying to start a fight with the Grayson family? Does it look like I’m trying to ruin my own life?”
Lucy frowned, thinking it over. The logic made sense. No one with half a brain would do something so reckless.
“Well… who knows what you were thinking at the time.”
