“Yes.”
Brendan laughed, like he’d just heard the punchline to a private joke. His smile was all mockery. “Just what I’d expect from a face that’s been through surgery. No matter how close the look, something always feels off. I wonder… if I pressed your nose, would it just squish flat?”
Claire didn’t flinch. She just let out a soft laugh. “You worry too much. Since everyone’s here, let me make this official. I’ve already discussed it with the elders. Three days from now, we’ll have a banquet at the Ballard estate, invite all the most important families, and announce who I am. I’d love to see all you there…”
Brendan rolled his eyes. “As if your identity’s really confirmed. What’s there to announce? You’re making it sound like you’re about to be crowned head of the family.”
“If you’re so suspicious, feel free to check for yourself. As for the family head position, you really don’t have to worry. I’m my mother’s only daughter. Sooner or later, that spot will be mine.”
The words weren’t even cold before Sam, sitting right at the front, snorted. “The Ballard family has always respected strength above everything. You think you can sit tight in that throne? You’re talking too big for your age, little girl.”
“Exactly. The strong win. And back then, both of you couldn’t beat my mother. Looks like you really weren’t strong enough.”
Instantly, Sam and Brendan’s faces went cold. Their stares were sharp and icy, fixed on Claire.
Maxwell, who stood off to the side, glanced at Claire. She held her chin high, like the whole world should bow to her. He couldn’t help but frown. She was sharp, almost too sharp.
Claire looked down, a smile tugging at her lips. “I’ve met everyone now. That’s all for today. I hope to see all of you at the banquet in three days.”
She kept her head high as she walked up the stairs, her steps confident, almost defiant.
