Julian walked in, tall and commanding, his strikingly handsome face unreadable, his presence carrying a quiet, natural elegance. Without hesitation, he went straight to Madeline and stopped at her side.
Claire blinked in surprise, then frowned. She hadn’t expected Julian to show up. Now things were definitely going to get messier.
Julian slipped his hand into Madeline’s, his eyes like ice as he looked at Claire. His voice was calm and cool. “Are you always this quick to throw guests out, or is that just how the Ballard family does things?”
Claire’s lips twitched, barely noticeable. Just then, the three elders arrived, glancing around as they picked up on the tension in the room. For a second, they just stood there, not sure what to make of it.
Maxwell hurried over, brows drawn tight as he looked from Madeline to Madeline, then to Julian. He hesitated before speaking. “What’s going on here?”
Julian’s gaze shifted to Maxwell, his tone steady and almost bored. “Maxwell, is that your family’s idea of hospitality? Kicking out your guests?”
Maxwell glanced at Claire, taking everything in. He could already guess what was happening, but still, he forced himself to answer. “Of course not.”
Julian let out a short, cold laugh, his eyes glinting with warning. “Really? Then why did you invite us, only to have someone try to kick us out at the door? Are you messing with us?”
Maxwell’s frown deepened as he looked at Claire.
By now, Claire had pulled herself together. She stepped forward and said, “Mr. Grayson, you’ve got it wrong. I never meant to throw you out. I was trying to get rid of her. She’s pretending to be me. Isn’t that enough reason to kick her out? No one invited her. I think it’s perfectly reasonable.”
