The elevator still hadn’t arrived. Lucy kept glancing back, clutching her phone tight, whispering to herself, “Come on, pick up, pick up…”
She spotted Claire coming after her. Her heart dropped.
Meanwhile, at the hotel, Julian and Madeline were getting ready to leave. After thinking it over, Madeline decided not to bring the kids to the Ballard estate. She just knew something was bound to go wrong at the banquet, and she couldn’t risk putting them in danger.
Once the boys were settled in their room, Madeline and Julian finally headed out. Madeline didn’t wear the gown Brendan had sent her. She’d already brought one of her own, and Julian’s people had even prepared another. In the end, she just didn’t want the hassle that came with wearing Brendan’s dress. It would only stir up more drama. That was the last thing she wanted.
Outside the hotel, Julian had already asked Miles to arrange their ride. To be extra careful, he set up an escort of five bodyguard cars.
When Madeline came down the stairs, holding up her dress, she saw six cars lined up at the front entrance. Four tall, broad-shouldered bodyguards in matching uniforms stood beside each one.
Julian was in the middle, wearing a sharp black suit. He looked so put together, standing there while Miles filled him in on something, head bowed as he listened. With that perfect profile, he was impossible not to notice.
Madeline’s eyes lingered on him.
Their whole group was such a spectacle that people passing by couldn’t help but stop and stare.
Julian spotted Madeline coming out and turned to her. In that moment, it was like there was no one else in the world.
She wore a gold, sequined gown with a long, trailing hem. The tasteful cutouts showed off her curves, and under the lights, her features seemed almost unreal.
Julian couldn’t look away. He walked over, slow and steady.
Madeline watched as he got closer. Her heart sped up and she felt almost breathless from the force of his presence.
He slipped his arm around her waist, so natural and confident. Madeline’s breath caught. With how close they were, all she could see was him.
She tilted her head up, her gaze moving from his jaw to those dark eyes. He was staring right at her, completely mesmerized.
