The SUV shot forward, moving so fast it made your heart stop. At that speed, a collision would destroy both cars.
The driver in the black car clearly had no death wish. He swerved at the very last second, but it was too late. The SUV slammed into his side with a thunderous crash, sending the black car rolling over. Glass shattered everywhere and stuff from inside flew out onto the road.
The scene was a total mess.
The SUV’s front end was smashed in, and it rolled to a stop. Inside, the driver’s eyes glinted, cold and dangerous, a hint of a cruel smile on his lips as he watched the chaos.
Madeline’s heart was pounding so hard, she thought it might actually leap out of her chest.
The second the SUV had appeared, she knew exactly who was behind the wheel.
No one else was that reckless. It could only him.
Her face darkened, and she gathered her dress in her hands. She didn’t care about her high heels digging into the pavement. She just walked straight over, every step full of purpose.
The window rolled down. Casey looked completely unfazed, like he’d done this a hundred times. He gave her a little nod, lifting an eyebrow. “What a coincidence.”
“Do you even care about your own life?” Madeline snapped at him. Her voice shook a little, still rattled by what she’d just witnessed.
It was the first time Casey had ever seen her so fierce. He just smiled, a soft, careless laugh coming out. “What’s there to be afraid of? I had it under control.”
Under control? If the other driver hadn’t chickened out, if they’d both slammed into each other head-on at that speed, they’d both be dead. There was no way to predict what would happen.
He really was insane.
Madeline was only wearing a thin evening dress, but she was already covered in cold sweat. She took a shaky breath as she saw a police car pulling up, probably because someone had called for help.
Casey just raised an eyebrow, not looking the least bit interested in leaving. His eyes lingered on Madeline for a moment, and there was something like admiration there.
But he didn’t stare. He looked away, smiling to himself. “You should go. I’ll handle everything here.”
Madeline looked at him, her heart still racing.
He’d always been like this, like his life didn’t matter, always doing the most reckless things with an attitude that said none of it fazed him. And somehow, he always managed to come out on top.
He was a legend, but a totally unhinged one.
She took another breath, finally ready to leave like he said. But as she turned, her heel caught on a broken car part left on the ground. Her foot slipped, and she started to fall.
Casey’s eyes narrowed. He moved to open the door.
But before he could, a strong arm wrapped around Madeline’s waist, steadying her and pulling her back against a very familiar chest.
Casey saw it happen. The worry on his face disappeared, and he pulled his hand back inside the car.
Madeline let out a shaky breath of relief. She glanced down at the broken parts scattered around her feet, then looked up. She met Julian’s eyes and saw the lingering worry there.
