Helene’s hand trembled, just for a second, and it was clear Claire’s words had rattled her.

She hesitated, then let her hand drop, her eyes fixed on Claire’s face. A mocking laugh slipped out. “Wow. I never thought I’d actually meet someone who’d go so far as to get plastic surgery to look like another person.”

Claire just shrugged. “So what? It’s a face worth a fortune, isn’t it? The face of Ms. Ballard. If Madeline really comes back to the Ballard family and becomes their daughter, you’d be jealous, wouldn’t you?”

Helene clenched her teeth, her eyes shining with something dark and ugly.

Madeline, the Ballard heiress? Please. She didn’t deserve that title.

Claire caught the look in Helene’s eyes and knew without a doubt—Helene hated Madeline, maybe even more than she did. And with emotions running this wild, there was no telling what Helene might do.

Claire smiled to herself. “I know you hate Madeline. I do too.”

Helene narrowed her eyes. “Why do you hate her?”

Claire straightened, forcing herself to look steady, and stepped in closer. Her voice was cold. “Because her mom, Shelly, killed my adoptive father.”

Helene’s eyes widened.

Claire’s adoptive father... that was Brian. Julian’s father.

“You mean Madeline’s mother killed Julian’s dad?”

Claire nodded. “That’s right.”

Helene grabbed Claire’s arm. “Are you serious?”

“I wouldn’t lie about this. That’s why I went through with the surgery. I wanted to sneak into the Ballard family, get close to Shelly. I just haven’t found her yet, so for now I have to find a way to stay in the family.”

“So you did all of this to get revenge for Julian’s father?”

Claire nodded again. “Yes.”

Maybe he wouldn’t believe it right away, but it would drive a wedge between him and Madeline. And once that happened, he’d stop helping her.

Without Julian by her side, Madeline would be so much easier to deal with.

What Claire and Helene didn’t know was that Reyna, who had come out to see the Grayson family off, had overheard everything.

Reyna stood there, stunned. She rushed back inside to find Sam.

After she spilled everything she’d heard, Sam jumped to his feet. “Are you sure?”

Reyna nodded. “I heard every word. That ‘Madeline’ admitted she’s actually Claire. She said she had plastic surgery to become Madeline, so she could get into the Ballard family and get revenge on Shelly for Brian’s death. She said Shelly killed him.”

Sam stared at her, barely able to believe it. “So we were right all along. This Madeline is a fake. Just like Mrs. Grayson said, she’s really Claire?”

“That’s right. Should we tell the elders now?”
