Twin Cupids at Work Daddy Come Home novel Chapter 581

When the doctor finally came out, Maxwell moved quickly to meet him. “How is she?”

The doctor gave a tired sigh. “Her back was slashed with a knife. The wound is serious. Whoever did this knew exactly what they were doing, but we’ve taken care of it.”

“Is it life-threatening?”

“No, nothing like that. The cut is pretty long, though, so we had to put in several stitches. There’s going to be a scar. For now, she just needs to rest and heal.”

Maxwell nodded. “Alright. Thank you.”

Claire came out then, leaning on an attendant for support. She looked ghostly pale, and her voice was so soft it was barely there. “Well…”

Maxwell’s brow furrowed in concern. “Why did you come out? You should be resting.”

“Please… you have to help me. That imposter tried to kill me. I almost didn’t make it back.” As she spoke, tears started streaming down her cheeks.

She knew she needed a reason for her injuries. Blaming Helene wouldn’t do her any favors, but if she pinned it on Madeline, it could only help her.

“So you’re saying the other Madeline sent someone after you?”

Claire wiped at her tears, her hand trembling. “Yes. The person who attacked me said so themselves. They told me I was in the way and needed to be eliminated. I’ve never had trouble with anyone else. The only person I’ve had any conflict with lately is her. It couldn’t have been anyone else.”

She spun her story with practiced innocence, her eyes wide and pleading. She looked so fragile, it was hard not to feel sorry for her.

“She’s desperate to get rid of me because she wants to be Ms. Ballard. I was lucky today. If I hadn’t managed to escape, if I’d died there, she could have taken my place just like that. She really is ruthless.”

Earlier, Maxwell and the other elders had agreed that, with so many questions about Claire’s identity, she shouldn’t stay at the Ballard estate for now. But her injury made it impossible to bring it up.

“Never mind. It’s nothing. Just get some rest.”

Claire lowered her head, looking even more delicate, and nodded weakly.

Once everyone had left, Maxwell’s mood only got worse. There was no getting around it—one of these two women had to be the real Madeline. If Claire was telling the truth, did that mean the other Madeline was just as cruel and calculating? If that was the case, neither of them was anything like Shelly.

For the first time, Maxwell felt completely at a loss.

After the elders left, Claire asked the staff to leave her alone. Once her room was empty, she pulled out her phone and called Helene. According to their plan, Helene should have already told Julian everything by now. She couldn’t help but wonder how he’d reacted when he heard the news.
