They were leaving for the Capital tomorrow, and with nothing urgent on her plate, Madeline spent the morning packing. After she finished, she took Noah, Oliver, and Luke out for a walk around town.
Luke was basically glued to her side by now, acting like her own personal bodyguard. He followed her everywhere, never more than a few steps behind.
Eventually, she managed to coax the boys into playing together, leaving her with a few precious moments of peace. She slipped away and called Brenda.
Brenda was a total gossip queen, always the first to know absolutely everything. But the stuff online about last night’s banquet was all over the place, so she was dying to hear the real story.
Madeline told her everything, keeping her voice calm. By the time she finished, Brenda was fuming.
“So it was really Claire?” Brenda asked.
“Yeah. Judging by how she acted, I’m pretty sure.”
“Oh my God, that is insane. Is she that desperate for money? Tossing away her own identity, changing her whole face, stealing someone else’s life… That’s just gross. So what are you going to do?”
Madeline’s eyes grew serious. “I’m still looking for proof. She wants to get rid of me, so she’ll definitely try something else. As long as she keeps making moves, she’ll mess up eventually.”
“I hope you can end this soon. Just thinking about it freaks me out.”
“Me too,” Madeline said, letting out a long sigh.
Then Brenda’s tone shifted, lighter and teasing. “So… Julian went with you. Are you two living together now?”
Madeline’s cheeks warmed. She thought about that night, unable to hide her smile. “Yeah.”
Brenda’s laugh was wicked. “No way. Did you two… sleep together?”
Madeline nearly choked. “You’re so direct. Seriously.”
“Come on, just tell me. Did you or didn’t you?”
“…Yeah.”
