Madeline nodded.
“That’s why you wanted to talk to me alone.”
“We have to be careful. If we let anything slip now, it might tip them off. Until we know the truth, everyone’s under suspicion.”
“You’re being thorough. But you really don’t know my oldest son. He’d never have the nerve for something like this.”
“You can never truly know people’s hearts. The Graysons’ fortune is enough to make anyone desperate, even if it means turning on their own family.”
Madeline had seen her share of plotting and betrayal. She knew firsthand what people would do for money. If Claire could change her face for the Ballard inheritance, it wasn’t impossible to believe Matthew could go as far as murder for the family fortune.
She understood this all too well. She was sure Christian did too.
Christian studied her. “So you’re telling me all this to get me to stop interfering in your relationship.”
Madeline didn’t even try to deny it. “But I also know you love Julian. Everything you do is for his sake. He knows that too. That’s exactly why I don’t want to put Julian in the middle anymore.”
“You really think that once you clear your mother’s name, and prove she had nothing to do with Brian’s death, I’ll just let the two of you be together?”
A small smile tugged at Madeline’s lips. “I’ve always believed that when a family stands together, everything else works itself out. You can’t change how Julian feels about me, and you can’t change the fact that I’m the mother of his children…
I do hope you’ll be able to let go of your resentment toward my mother and stop standing between me and Julian.
And as for whoever’s behind all this, I’ll do my best to find the truth for you.”
Christian regarded her in silence for a moment, the anger in his expression fading.
“You’ve put a lot of thought into this. But this is the Graysons’ business. We’ll handle the investigation ourselves. As for you and Julian, even if I don’t stand in your way, it’s not like things are easy for you two now.”
Knock, knock.
Two soft knocks came from the door.
Christian shot Madeline a quick look.
She rushed to tidy up the papers on the desk and slipped them into her bag.
Christian turned to the door. “Who is it?”
“Grandpa, it’s me.” Denise’s voice came from outside.
Christian’s gaze shifted. “Come in.”
Denise came in with a plate of fruit. “Grandpa.”
“I told everyone not to disturb me. What brings you here now?”
Denise kept her expression sweet and innocent. “Grandpa, I just cut up some fruit for you. I wanted you to try it—it’s really sweet.”
She glanced quickly between Christian and Madeline.
“Leave it and go.”
Her sharp tone didn’t faze Lincoln in the least. He stepped closer, lowering his voice. “Not close? Last time at Golden Glow, when I was drunk…”
Madeline shot him a frosty glare. “You seriously want to bring up Golden Glow? Didn’t I beat you up enough last time?”
Lincoln laughed quietly and reached toward her, his voice shameless. “No need to keep pushing me away, Ms. Monroe. Julian’s moved on from you. Why not come with me instead? I promise I’ll treat you better. Whatever Julian gave you, I’ll double it.”
Just as his hand nearly touched her, Madeline caught his wrist with a quick motion.
Lincoln raised his eyebrows, flirting with a smile as if he still thought it was a game. Madeline didn’t miss a beat. She turned, twisted his arm, and with one smooth move, tossed him cleanly over her shoulder.
With a heavy thud, Lincoln slammed onto the floor, looking stunned and confused.
Madeline looked down at him, her smile bright and effortless. “You want to buy me? Maybe take a good look in the mirror first. Compete with Julian? That’s a joke. You’re not even in the same league.”
“Madeline, you…”
Lincoln clutched his lower back, glaring up as she walked away.
“You bitch. Just wait, I’ll pay you back for this.”
Madeline walked straight out of the Grayson house, heels clicking on the pavement. She slid into her car and drew a deep breath, trying to steady herself. Just then, her phone rang.
James.
She glanced at the screen and picked up. No small talk from him. “You’re back in the Capital, aren’t you?”
