Upstairs
Madeline had just reached the second-floor landing when she spotted Alianna coming down the stairs. She was wearing a simple white lace nightgown, her hair still damp and the scent of fresh shower gel clinging to her skin. Obviously, she’d just showered.
The moment Alianna saw her, she widened her eyes and put on a perfect look of surprise. “Madeline, I didn’t expect to see you here.”
Madeline let her gaze drift over Alianna, lingering for a second on the dazzling diamond necklace around her neck. Made entirely of diamonds, carefully set so each stone caught the light, it was beautiful, but what really stood out was the main one—a flawless, fifty-carat, pear-shaped diamond. If her memory was right, this necklace was the birthday gift Shelly had won at auction last year for ten million dollars.
Madeline’s eyes grew colder. It was obvious where Alianna had found it. The necklace had come straight from Madeline’s own room.
Alianna blinked with practiced innocence, then glanced down at herself and gave a little shrug.
“It was raining outside and I slipped,” she said, smiling sweetly. “My clothes got ruined. Julian told me to change here. This is your nightgown, right? You don’t mind if I borrow it for a bit, do you, Madeline?”
Madeline stared back without a word, her face ice-cold.
Alianna met her hard look, her own eyes wide and pleading, as if she were nothing but a helpless little rabbit.
“Madeline, I saw so many of your things in the room… Are you moving back in?” Alianna paused, her tone turning innocent and concerned. “I shouldn’t say this, but you and Julian are done. There’s really no point in clinging to him anymore. Isn’t that kind of desperate? Maybe even a little shameless?”
Madeline raised an eyebrow, her voice flat. “Shameless?”
Alianna didn’t even miss a beat. “Of course. Julian doesn’t even remember you. If he loved you, he wouldn’t have forgotten you. You keep throwing yourself at him—isn’t that pitiful?”
Madeline nodded slowly. “You have quite the way with words. Is this how you and your mother always talk, spreading rumors and stirring up trouble with Ray? Trying to come between my parents? Pushing my mother around?”
Honestly, Madeline had known from past conversations that Alianna and her mother were far from innocent.
