Madeline couldn’t even hear Alianna’s voice anymore. She just stared at the man in front of her. The man who had once looked at her like she was the only thing that mattered, and now, all he had for her was that cold stare… and all for another woman.
She knew he’d lost his memory. She knew, rationally, she should be patient with him. But knowing didn’t make her heart hurt any less.
“Is everyone at the door dead? Who let you in?” His voice was flat, sharp, all angles and frost.
Madeline’s eyes flashed with something dark. She laughed, but it was short and bitter. “I let myself in. What, you gonna throw me out now?”
The harshness in her gaze did something strange to Julian. His chest tightened, a pressure he couldn’t name or push away.
He had no idea why, but any time he saw this woman look hurt, he felt it right in his own heart—like her sadness was contagious.
She’d followed him to the banquet with kids in tow, started drama right in front of everyone, and now she’d chased him all the way home. He should toss her out, no questions asked, but somehow he just couldn’t say the words. They stuck in his throat.
Something about all this made Julian’s mood even darker, his face more stormy.
Madeline glanced at Alianna, steady and calm. Her smile didn’t reach her eyes. “You said I was bullying you?”
“Isn’t that exactly what you’re doing?”
“Do you really even know what bullying means?”
Her eyes had gone icy, sharp enough to draw blood.
Alianna inched closer to Julian, her nerves on edge. “What are you… what are you gonna do?”
Madeline’s heart was cracking open, but she still managed a bright, almost reckless smile. “She called me vicious, right? So I showed her vicious. She wanted to fall down the stairs, so I helped her out. What, are you worried about your delicate little beauty now, Mr. Grayson?”
She held Julian’s gaze. If he showed even an inch of sympathy for Alianna… that was it. She’d take Noah and Oliver and leave for the Capital right then. Forget amnesia. She’d never look back.
Forgetting her was one thing… losing him for someone else was something she couldn’t live with.
Julian seemed furious at Madeline’s actions, but there was no sympathy in his eyes, not even a sideways glance at Alianna. And that, at least, made it bearable.
Right then, the sound of sharp knocking echoed from downstairs.
The front door opened and several uniformed police officers stepped inside, badges out and faces serious. One spoke up, his voice clear. “Good evening. We got a report that someone broke in here and stole property. Can we take a look around?”
