Reborn, Reawakened, Rekindled novel Chapter 529

Neil seemed uninterested in the conversation and abruptly ended the call.

You could say he was rude for hanging up, yet polite for taking the call in the first place - a paradox in manners.

"You snagged a project from the Dawson family?" I inquired.

"That's none of your business. Just heed my warning, or you'll end up oblivious to how you fell into Russel's trap," Neil replied aloofly.

Being caught in Russel's trap seemed a bit extreme.

Neil's eyes darkened as he fixed his gaze on me, "I'm not talking about a physical death, are you dense?"

"When did I say it was a physical death?" I was a bit perplexed. I was just reflecting on Russel's past actions. Maybe my past experiences with him had clouded my judgment, or perhaps his seemingly incorruptible character had left a lasting impression on me. Despite all that had happened, I was wary yet never doubted his intent to harm me.

However, on closer thought, there were times when Russel was incredibly cold-hearted, even ruthless.

Like the trap he laid with Bonnie at the engagement party, and his indifference towards Chloe Reynolds' life and death.

Neil didn't say anything else, just pulled out a file from his drawer and tossed it on the table, "Take a look."

As he uttered those words, I sensed a suppressed fury emanating from him.

I picked up the file, puzzled, and started to go through it. After a few minutes, I was both shocked and confused. It was about Karina's failed hospital rescue after her attempted suicide by jumping into a river.

There was another report that followed, stating that Karina was out of danger.

And on that report was Russel's signature.

Back then, Russel was probably still an intern, five years away from graduation, and in the internship phase of his medical career. It was normal for him to be involved in Karina's rescue.

"What does this mean?" I had a vague guess but dared not confirm it, so I asked Neil.

Neil's face darkened, reminding me of a sky about to pour with rain, filled with an oppressive aura. He looked at the file in my hand, "Karina faked her death to escape the country, and Russel played a significant part in it."

The news shocked me, completely overturning my understanding of Russel.

At that time, Russel and Neil were supposed to be very close. Even though Karina initially pursued Russel and later got together with Neil, Russel never developed feelings for Karina, so there was no rivalry between them.

"Why would he do that?" It took a while for me to regain my voice, filled with disbelief.

"I don't know." Neil looked at me sharply, "Now you understand what I meant, right? Stay away from him."

A chill ran down my spine at the thought of Russel's betrayal of Neil so many years ago. They were supposed to be best friends.

The study was silent as I was deep in shock, unable to focus on anything else.

Until my phone rang, breaking the silence. Snapping back to reality, I saw it was Russel, the very person Neil and I had been discussing.

Seeing Russel's name now gave me an uneasy feeling.

What kind of person was he, really?
