"Uh huh, I know," Kitty choked out.
"Is it that the disease wasn't under control, or... did something fail?" I asked.
"Karina promised to treat my dad, but then she said she couldn't find a suitable treatment and had to give up. My dad held on till the end, he must've suffered a lot," Kitty replied.
I remembered hearing about Karina pressuring Neil to marry her using this situation, but in the end, I chose not to tell Kitty.
I had planned to attend Daniel Wilson's memorial service, to see him off one last time. Whether it was for our past professional relationship, or for my friendship with Kitty, it seemed right to go.
But Kitty gently refused me, "Irene, thank you for wanting to be there for my dad, but we are back in Dreamscape District now, it's too far. You have two kids to take care of, don't put yourself through the back-and-forth. We'll see each other when the opportunity arises."
She must have assumed I was still in Eldoria.
After a brief conversation, she had to go attend to some business. Seeing me lost in thought, Faith asked, "What happened? Did a friend's relative pass away?"
I nodded, not saying anything more.
Faith never asked questions that weren't her business. We both went back to tending the garden, each lost in our own thoughts.
---
By the time it was around three or four in the afternoon, Neil and Ryan had finished their business, but it clearly hadn't been a pleasant conversation.
Neil walked out of the living room, looking a bit grim. Seeing me tending to the garden with Faith, he furrowed his brow, "Is your car outside?"
"Yeah, why?" I asked, puzzled.
"I'm riding with you back to Rosemont," Neil said.
I was taken aback. Wasn't he supposed to stay here now? And Hiram was here, waiting for treatment.
Faith chimed in, "Why the sudden decision to go back to Rosemont? What about Hiram? Did you arrange someone to take care of him? Don't let Karina whisk him away!"
Neil glanced at Faith, "I've already sent someone to bring him back to Rosemont, don't worry."
Hiram had already been sent back to Rosemont? I wasn't expecting that.
And Karina, who had been so adamant about treating Hiram herself, how could she just stand by and let Hiram be taken away?
"What are you waiting for? Start the car, or I'll drive," Neil commanded when he saw I was still frozen in place.
I was baffled. Didn't Neil have his own cars? He had a fleet of luxury cars in both Rosemont and Springvale, why did he need to ride in mine?
This wasn't the first time this had happened and I sometimes felt like I was his personal chauffeur.
"If you want to stay here, you can," Neil said, turning to head to the garage to get a car.
With Ryan and Faith having reconciled, and Hiram already on his way to Rosemont, there was no need for me to stay. Since Neil was going back to Rosemont, I decided to go with him.
