“I love it.” Felix said. “It’s beautiful. You’re beautiful.”
Cassie felt her cheeks reddening. “You clean up nicely too.”
The orchestra changed the music they were playing and Felix held out his hand for Cassie.
“Dance with me.”
“I’m going to have to turn you down. Ballroom dancing isn’t one of my talents.” She admitted with a sigh.
“That doesn’t matter. I’ll guide you. Come on.”
“Fine.” She said, placing his hands in his. “Just don’t dip me. I’m not wearing a bra and I’d rather have my boobs remain in my dress for the rest of the night.”
“It seems the two of us have very different plans for your boobs.” Felix said just low enough that only Cassie heard his words.
The two of them made their way toward the center of the room and stopped underneath a giant chandelier that shimmered above them, casting a warm glow on the dance floor. Felix led Cassie through the steps of the waltz, his hand firmly around her waist as he guided her around the dance floor. To anyone watching, it was obvious who the complete novice was, as Cassie’s focus was on trying not to make a fool of herself. The orchestra music swelled and before Cassie had anytime to grasp what was going on, Felix pretended to sweep her in a dip.
“I told you not to dip me.” She hissed, smacking his chest playfully with the back of her hand.
He smiled down at her. “I know. I was trying to get you to loosen up. You looked so stiff. Just relax okay. Focus on the music and nothing else.”
Cassie exhaled, laid her head on his shoulder and felt herself slowly loosen up. It worked not because she focused on the music like Felix advised, but because she focused on his very presence.
“I’m going to tell you something. You don’t have to react or say anything but I just want you to know it.” Felix began. “Sometimes I go to the rooftop and just stay there, not for the quiet atmosphere but because now, I can see the beauty of the place. When I first met you, I was in a very dark place. I didn’t care about anyone or anything but somehow you’ve managed to make me see the light that is in the world. People called me the Ice King because my heart was this useless unfeeling lump in my chest but my heart is melting and that’s because of you.” He pulled away from her so that he could look her in the eyes. “I guess what I’m trying to say is that I love you, Cassie.”
“You cannot make a heartfelt speech like that and expect me not to say anything.” Cassie said, her voice cracking. “I didn’t expect to fall in love with you but I did. I am so fully and completely in love with you, Felix Callahan.”
He looked at her like she was his entire world before pulling her in and placing a peck on her lips. “I’d do more but I don’t want to ruin your makeup.”
“Fuck my makeup!” Cassie said. She pulled him closer by the lapels of his tuxedo and pressed their lips together.
When they finally pulled away Felix leaned in and pressed his forehead against Cassie’s. “I think I might have smudged your lipstick a little.” He teased.
Cassie let out a short burst of laughter. She was about to respond when she noticed that his attention was focused elsewhere. She turned around to see a woman approaching them lazily but determinedly, dragging a suitcase behind her. Unlike everyone else in attendance, she was dressed down in a plaid shirt tucked into a pair of high waist jeans. Tousled strands of dark brown hair peeked out from beneath her forest green beanie. When the mystery woman finally got to where they were, she stared at Felix for what seemed like an eternity before slapping him hard enough to draw the attention of others and make the violinist miss a note.
