Finn Boulton, clad in a black shirt, stood by the door, appearing much skinnier than a few days ago, his usual cocky demeanor nowhere to be seen.
"What are you doing here?"
Finn stared at Brittany's face with an almost obsessive fascination, silent for a moment, then said, "Can we talk?"
"Are you here to defend Sherry Boulton?"
"No," Finn shook his head, "I want to talk to you."
Brittany had no intention of letting Finn into her and Isaac's home. She picked up her keys, signaling Finn to follow her downstairs.
Finn gave a pale smile and led the way.
They walked downstairs, crossed the street, and finally stopped by a pond in the estate.
Finn couldn't recall the last time he had a proper conversation with Brittany.
He looked at the cleaned pond, hands on the railing. "I remember, around this time, you'd always make a big pot of soup and bring it over to me."
"Every year, I look forward to your soup most."
Brittany frowned in silence.
"I used to think you abandoned me. My first thought when I woke up was whether you're still alive.
I know you're a girl, and it's normal to be scared, so I've been waiting. Waiting for you to come to see me, to apologize."
Finn waited for a long time, but it never happened. Everyone said Brittany left him, badmouthing her.
He defended her, but somehow, he ended up criticizing Brittany too.
"When we were together, I really liked you. I used to imagine us getting married countless times," Finn looked at Brittany, devoid of previous anger, only the purest love remaining. "I've thought a lot lately. I was wrong."
"I shouldn't have lied to you, bullied you... I made a promise..." He choked up, "I promised to be good to you all my life. I'm sorry."
Things in the Boulton family were going downhill, and he found himself missing the past more.
Missing the times when Brittany was still with him.
He wished to end up with Brittany.
When he first met Brittany, he swore to protect her forever.
But in the end, he hurt her most deeply.
