"Della, listen to me, treat Ronan well. You guys seem to have hit it off, and that doesn't come easy," Shelley said while serving food to Cordelia.

"Hit it off? Really?" Cordelia found it ironic. Was it because they had slept together?

Shelley paused. "Why would you sleep together if you didn't hit it off?”

"Fair point," Cordelia responded half-heartedly. She knew their relationship was on borrowed time anyway.

"Oh, by the way, Della, I got two amulets from a fortune teller for you and Ronan. You didn’t wake up yesterday, so I gave them both to Ronan. Don't forget to ask for yours," Shelley said. "In a relationship, not only should the man give, but the woman also. Only then can you stay together for a long time."

"Is that how you and Dad were?" Cordelia asked her mom.

Shelley's eyes dimmed. Cordelia realized that she might have said something wrong.

"Oh, by the way, Della, does Ronan have any plans for the Halloween?" Shelley asked carefully.

Cordelia was now Ronan's wife and had to respect his plans.

"Not yet, why?"

"If he doesn’t have any plans, I’d like you to accompany me to Roseville."

Cordelia didn't respond. She didn't want to go, but she knew her mom would go anyway. So, she had no choice but to agree.

Cordelia's grandmother lived in Roseville. She had been living with Cordelia's uncle Ronald, a bus driver in Roseville. Ronald's wife, Sienna, was a stay-at-home mom. When Shelley's medical bills ran out, Cordelia tried to borrow money from Ronald. But Sienna shut the door on her, saying, "In today's society, we can help if you need it temporarily, but we can't help those who need long-term care. It's a bottomless pit.
