The Contracted Ever After novel Chapter 557

Cordelia was blindsided when she received the message on Facebook Messenger, utterly confused. She thought she'd been performing well at her job. Why on earth would she be fired?

After giving it some thought, she figured it must’ve been related to Petra's scandal—guilty by association, perhaps.

While Cordelia was stewing in her thoughts, her phone rang. It was Emily from Lumos Enterprises.

"Cordelia, Mrs. Evans?" The voice on the other end was gentle and refined—it had been three years since they last spoke.

"Yes, this is she. Hello, Ms. Emily," Cordelia replied, recognizing the familiar voice from years past.

"I'm the HR Director at Lumos Enterprises, Mrs. Evans. Do you remember me? We'd like to offer you a position at Lumos Enterprises as an independent director, focusing on liaising with Empower Operations. The annual salary would be two million. What do you think?"

"May I have some time to think it over?" Cordelia didn't outright reject the offer.

"Of course, Mrs. Evans. I understand this is quite sudden. Take all the time you need."

Cordelia mused that if the HR Director herself was reaching out, it must've been Ronan's doing, especially since he was at Empower Operations for a meeting that day. It seemed he had a hand in her dismissal as well.

[You had a part in firing me, didn't you?] Cordelia texted Ronan on Messenger.

[You're overthinking it. Offering you a job was out of concern. Lumos Enterprises pays as well, if not better, than Empower Operations.]

Cordelia had to admit that her getting fired was probably not Ronan's fault. He offered her a job out of kindness.

She lost her job, likely due to Petra's "accidental fall." It probably never crossed her mind that Ronan would secure a position for Cordelia at Lumos Enterprises.

But her primary job was in Birchwood. How could she frequently travel to Millstone for meetings?

After his meeting, Ronan asked Cordelia out to dinner, where she brought up the issue of distance. Ronan brushed it off. "We'll sort it out later. Where are you staying tonight?"

Cordelia was speechless. Cordelia cared about the practicalities of life, while he was all about comfort and pleasure.

"I'm going back to my place," she said, looking down at her meal.
