Everett was standing not far away, smoking by himself.
Elise was scared of him, and her face changed color. Ariella gave her a signal to leave first. Elise nervously made faces, and Ariella responded. The two communicated silently, and finally, Elise took the first step to leave.
After glancing at Everett's side profile, Ariella quietly took a breath, stepped forward, and stood two steps away from him like usual. Politely, she said, "Mr. Carter."
Everett exhaled a cloud of white smoke, looking elsewhere with no expression on his face, and said indifferently, "Generally speaking, people who come here should be doing well. You don't have to put on an act in front of me. Seems like your friend is running a shell company."
Speaking the sharpest words in the blandest tone, Ariella never thought she could hide it from him, but she didn't expect Everett to be so straightforward about it.
For now, all she could do was admit her mistake and quickly explain, "I'm sorry, Mr. Carter. My friend started a new company, and people in the circle didn't recognize her. They bullied her because she's a girl and took advantage of her. So I had to 'pull some strings' for her. But she's really talented, and I believe she'll do well in her company."
Upon hearing this, Everett turned his head slightly and looked at Ariella with an inscrutable expression. "What does her company have to do with me?"
Without waiting for her answer, his eyes turned cold, and he questioned, "There are all kinds of people in this world, but it's the first time I've seen someone so blatantly trying to take advantage of me. Do you think I'm stupid, or do you think my kindness is easy to exploit?"
Ariella felt an overwhelming pressure, and facing Everett's questioning, she thought about apologizing, but it wouldn't help. So she replied without blinking, "I shouldn't have tried to be clever in front of a smart person like you. A simple apology wouldn't mean much to you. If you're really angry, you can consider our oral agreement yesterday invalid, and I promise I'll never use your name to take advantage of you again."
Everett's expression didn't change, and he remained unmoved. He thought Ariella had said all she had to say, but then she added, "Of course, you can also give me some time to make up for it in my area of expertise. I believe actions speak louder than words."
Everett's expression remained indifferent, and it was hard to tell if he was happy or angry. "You've said both the good and the bad."
This time, Ariella didn't respond, and just waited patiently to hear his decision. Everett looked away, took another drag of his cigarette, and said, "I hate being taken advantage of by strangers, but I'm always generous to my own people. I'll give you a chance. If you do well, then we'll be on the same side. I'll even help you regardless of the consequences. But if you don't do well..."
He looked at Ariella again, his black eyes seemingly quiet but actually full of danger and indifference. In a low voice and slow pace, he said, "If you don't do well, not only will I hold it against you, but I'll also become even more unforgiving."
Ariella looked calm, but her heart was pounding. She suddenly remembered the message Everett had sent her last night when she was in the car. The fact that Pizarro was pretending to be a cop was only known to the two of them, but Everett had mysteriously found out.
She wasn't sure when Everett had discovered it or if it was like the rumors circulating outside - that within a thousand meters of where Everett was, there could be no "suspicious" people, lest they plot against him.
Whether it was by chance or as expected, the more Ariella interacted with Everett, the more she felt the rumors were true. No wonder Elise was so scared just by hearing his name.
Feeling a lump in her throat, Ariella quickly forced herself to calm down and respond, "Thank you for giving me a chance, Mr. Carter. I'll do my best to become one of your 'own people.'"
Everett took one last drag of his cigarette, threw the butt on the ground, and said indifferently, "Tomorrow morning at ten."
Ariella nodded and replied, "Okay."
