"He doesn't love you, so why does he get to hurt you?"

Tears were on the brink of spilling from Matilda's eyes. "Chloe, can we go back home once I'm out of here?"

"It's impossible." Chloe's eyes were a shattered mess. "Declan let me out today because I begged on his porch for a whole day and night. He's got bodyguards ready to drag me back the moment I try to run. I'm trapped, with no way out."

Trapped with no way out.

She was just a plaything for Declan, an object of his disdain, toyed with and kept tightly in his grasp. He would never let her go, even if it meant crushing her.

With tearful eyes, Chloe said to Matilda, "I'm lucky I could come see you. I can't run away, Mat. He'd hurt the people close to me, I just can't risk it..."

Matilda knew the agony of being vulnerable, though she couldn't remember specifics, she instinctively empathized with the pain. Looking at Chloe's gaunt face, she said, "You need to eat more, don't neglect yourself."

"The way I am now, it doesn't matter if I'm neglected or not," Chloe said with a teary smile. "Once Declan tires of me, I'll finally be free."

Tears flowed freely from both Matilda and Chloe. They were both victims of their unfortunate circumstances, entangled in a sorrowful relationship with no salvation in sight.

When Declan arrived later, with Yvan in tow, Matilda and Chloe instinctively tensed up, watching the two men warily. Declan sneered, "What, scared of me?"

His remark was clearly aimed at Chloe.

Chloe trembled, and Matilda took her hand, giving her friend a reassuring smile before standing up. "Not at all, Mr. Yeager. Welcome back."

"Hmm."
