A Journey from Bitterness to Truth (Matilda and Yvan) novel Chapter 374

From that day on, Yvan started to pop by now and then. Whenever he decided to come over, he'd shoot a text to Matilda, making sure she wasn't asleep, before showing up at her doorstep with an assortment of fresh groceries.

Yvan knew his way around the kitchen, and his cooking skills were nothing short of impressive—a fact unknown to most, Rachel included. When he was home alone, he'd cook for himself, a routine he picked up during the five years Matilda was in jail.

He often wondered, what was going through his mind back then, cooking meal after meal by himself?

The busy figure that once stood in the kitchen was no longer there; he had become that figure himself.

Later on, almost every night Matilda found herself awake, she would see Yvan cooking on a portable stove by the hospital window. He even brought a big pot once, leaving Carl, his right-hand man, in complete shock. As they got out of the car, Carl asked what the boss was up to, to which the formidable Mr. Boyd replied, "Going to have a hot pot dinner with Matilda in the hospital!"

Half an hour later, fresh duck blood, baby bok choy, tripe, steaming lamb, eels, shrimp balls, including frog legs and pork brain, all still chilly, were served up. Yvan had fully utilized his capitalist ability to get anything with money, making a call and having the ingredients flown to Why City the same day, and then rushed to the hospital by the delivery service.

Matilda was flabbergasted at the array of ingredients that seemed to have appeared out of thin air, asking in disbelief, "Did you order all this?"

Yvan, busy preparing the broth, didn't look up but replied in a low voice, "Asked Carl to help buy them."

Carl, sitting on a small stool nearby, wore an awkward smile, not expecting Yvan to come up with such a plan after... well, everything. If Matilda ever got her memory back, remembering this hot pot meal might just leave her gagging.

Yvan chose a split pot, one side filled with a golden broth and the other with a spicy buttery concoction. As Matilda watched the layer of butter slowly melt into the broth, Carl and Yvan sat across from her. Yvan placed some of her favorite ingredients near her, whispering, "Wait for it to boil before eating."

Matilda's thoughts were a haze, looking at the ingredients, she wanted to ask, why are you doing this for me?
