A Journey from Bitterness to Truth (Matilda and Yvan) novel Chapter 421

Yet, all of this unfolded in utter silence. Matilda and Logan, asleep in the hospital, were blissfully unaware of the creeping conspiracy inching its way toward them…

...

Upon waking the next day, Yvan, as usual, came by, carrying some treats since it was the weekend. Logan, sitting to the side, looked up to see Yvan enter and visibly started, "You... why are you here?"

Yvan frowned; Logan's words clearly felt unwelcoming, yet he didn't voice his discomfort, merely stating softly, "It's the weekend. Just came to check on you guys."

Logan noticed the bag of sweets in Yvan's hand, from the dessert shop he and Adrian had visited the day before. Yvan had seen them there and guessed Logan might like the place, so he brought some more of its offerings today.

He set the desserts on the table, "Have you guys had lunch yet?"

Logan glanced over at Matilda, who sat quietly on the bed, and spoke for her, "We just woke up; it's already noon, and we haven't had lunch."

"I see." Yvan's voice softened, "Shall I order some takeout for you?"

There was something in Yvan's tone... almost a pleading kindness.

Logan nodded, and Yvan passed him the phone. Logan ordered the grilled chicken salad he wanted and chose a vegetable soup for Matilda, then handed the phone back, quietly saying, "Thanks, Mr. Boyd."

Those words were painfully formal.

Yvan forced a smile, not sure whom he was mocking.

After lunch ended, the room fell silent again. Yvan felt the irony; under any other circumstance, neither Matilda nor Logan would treat him with such coldness.

Maybe it was time to leave, to stop deluding himself.

Standing up, his voice rough as if holding back emotion, he announced, "Then, I'll be going."

Silence filled the hospital room; neither Matilda nor Logan spoke up to keep him.
