Hearing Criss say that, Matilda was deeply moved, yet she managed to smile at her best friend. "It's okay, it's all behind us now."
She had been through so much, but chose to leave it all in the past. Talking to Criss for a long time made Matilda feel like she needed to vent all the emotions she'd been suppressing.
"Am I being too dramatic?" Tears welled up in Matilda's eyes. "Was I too dramatic for keeping things from Yvan? I just want to know what I did wrong. Why would people think I'm being dramatic?"
Having endured miscarriages, jail time, cutting off a part of her finger, scars on her back, countless humiliations, and slaps—she soldiered through without a word of complaint. And yet, those nurses in the hospital whispered behind her back, criticizing her for not accepting Yvan's kindness.
Dramatic? Matilda laughed. "How can people be so cruel? They don't feel the pain because it's not happening to them. They call me dramatic so easily, but if they were in my shoes, they wouldn't be half as strong!"
"I know." Criss comforted her, patting her shoulder. "People can never fully understand what others go through. They say they feel for you, but it's just talk. I'm your best friend, and even I can't fully grasp your pain, let alone those who know nothing about you, yet they judge you so quickly. Matilda, you're not dramatic. You're the strongest, most courageous woman I've ever known."
Having let out her emotions, Matilda curled up in Criss's arms and closed her eyes to calm down. The man could only offer his presence, unable to heal her wounds.
In a world filled with gods and deities, none seemed to protect and guide humanity through the darkness of human hearts. One could only rely on oneself.
Just then, Logan came downstairs and asked Criss, "Did Mom have too much to drink?"
Criss, sitting on the couch, looked up and rubbed his temples, "Maybe a little."
