It was a steaming hot cup of Starbucks coffee.
Matilda looked at it, feeling as though the weight of a single cup of Starbucks now felt like a ton.
Seeing Matilda seemed to lift all the heavy feelings Yvan had been carrying around. At home, Opal was always passive-aggressive, and he just couldn't stand to be in that house anymore. He didn't know why, but he felt drawn to Matilda. He told himself, being by Matilda's side must feel so warm, right?
Yvan handed the cup to Matilda, saying, “You go ahead up. It’s Christmas Eve, just wanted to check on you.”
Just wanted to check on you.
What's there to check, Yvan? Look at us now.
Matilda forced a smile, taking the coffee from him. She felt no embarrassment; after all, he was the one in debt to her. No matter her attitude, it wouldn't be considered too much.
As Matilda turned to go up, Yvan watched her back, clad in a thick down jacket, his gaze deep and lingering. In the midwinter season, the chill wind swept up flakes of snow, starting to fall.
Matilda noticed too, just as she was entering the building, she looked up and saw the fine snowflakes falling into her eyes, one by one, stunningly beautiful.
This was the first snow Whty City had seen in years. When Matilda got inside, her hair was speckled with delicate white snowflakes. She opened the door and exclaimed to Logan, “Logan! It’s snowing!”
Logan, who had been playing chess with Chloe, jumped up excitedly. The kid had never seen snow before. He only remembered winters as cold. He had been envious hearing classmates from other places talk about how their hometowns got so much snow each year they could build snowmen.
Now it was snowing in Whty City too!
Logan shouted, “I want to go outside!”
