Upon hearing this, Zacharias slapped his thigh. "Then you guys are late. Conrad just arrived and is playing chess with the old lady. He even said he would spend New Year with her."

The arrival of Conrad was not unexpected. Matthew responded, then took Veronica's hand and headed towards the old lady's mansion.

Veronica reached the main entrance of the courtyard and saw Elizabeth sitting in a wheelchair, a scarf draped over her knees, gazing blankly at the blooming red plum in the courtyard. Even her response to Conrad seemed half-hearted.
