Agnes stepped out of Yolanda's office, pleasantly surprised at how smoothly things had gone. Could it be that she had been overly suspicious, misjudging Yolanda's intentions? Perhaps Yolanda had forgotten about their shared past. Anyway, Agnes decided not to dwell on it.
In the afternoon, she went through the documents of the News Department and studied the column called The Primary Perspective, which primarily covered societal news. The column had been temporarily halted due to some issues and was awaiting public selection for a new team.
After work, Agnes headed straight to Tim Tower. These days, she had been job hunting and couldn't look after Nocturne, who now went to work with Jared early in the morning.
Agnes had visited Tim Tower a few times and had become somewhat known amongst its employees. Rumors about her relationship with the CEO, Jared, were swirling around there; some speculated she was his new flame, others thought she was an old lover. Some even rumored she might be the mother of Jared's illegitimate child. Of course, some veteran secretaries knew she was Jared's ex-wife.
Agnes always tried to keep a low profile. She took the elevator, crossed the secretary department, and went straight to Jared's office. Nocturne was still asleep.
Mr. K, who was already there, was pacing around, scratching his head. "Jared, when will Nocturne wake up? I have so many questions for him. I've been trying to track down his master for so long, but I can't seem to find any leads," he said.
Jared asked, "What on earth have you been up to lately? You seem to have disappeared off the face of the earth."
Mr. K smirked, "I recently encountered an interesting adversary. We're competing to breach the information defense system of an overseas criminal organization. Whoever does it first will be the 'daddy.'"
Jared glanced at Mr. K, who still acted like a child. "Can't you do something productive?"
"How is this not productive? I'm doing good for the people. Plus, I'll definitely make that kid call me 'daddy'."
Jared shook his head and sighed. Just then, Agnes walked in.
Mr. K's jaw dropped. "Agnes?" he exclaimed in disbelief.
He hadn't seen Agnes in four years. Although he had seen Nocturne while in Manhattan, he had never directly interacted with Agnes. Her sudden appearance felt surreal.
Unable to believe his eyes, he blurted to Jared, "Jared, did you really find a look-alike to be your secretary? After four years, you still can't let go, huh? It was her who ruthlessly left you. If it were me, I would've tracked her down and taught her a lesson. Women can't be spoiled. She left you because you spoiled her too much. If I ever see her, I'll definitely help you take revenge."
Mr. K loved to talk big, but his physical strength was nothing compared to his abilities at the keyboard. He had always believed that Agnes would never come back, especially after the huge scandal and her four-year disappearance. Over these years, Jared had tried to find many substitutes. Sharon bore some resemblance to Agnes, and then there was Beatrice Pritchard, who had gone so far as to alter her appearance to look like Agnes.
Seeing the woman who looked almost exactly like Agnes, Mr. K couldn't help but suspect that Jared had found another ultimate stand-in.
