And for that very reason, Emma had no desire to see such a scene play out. She didn't want to see Evan have a sudden epiphany just because she was sick, kneeling before her to admit his mistakes, realizing what a monster he had been to her, and then putting on a show about the prodigal son returning.
Emma wasn't interested. For her, the moment she divorced Evan, he and their entire past became a closed chapter.
Melissa's expression soured. She glared at Emma, unwilling to accept her nonchalance. Seeing her so unconcerned, so confident, she felt a rage burning inside her.
"Hmph, who do you think you are, Emma?"
A vicious look crossed Melissa's face. Staring at the composed woman before her, Melissa's mind raced, searching for words that would hurt her.
A sudden flash of inspiration struck her. Melissa forced a smile and said with feigned casualness, "Sure, you were with him for eleven years. Even after the divorce, your place in his heart is irreplaceable. I might not be able to replace you on my own, but what about the two of us?"
"What do you mean?"
Emma's smile vanished, her expression returning to its previous coldness.
Seeing that she'd finally cracked that effortless composure, Melissa couldn't help but feel a surge of satisfaction. A brilliant smile spread across her face. "What do you think?"
This time, she was the one in control.
But she didn't seem to expect an answer from Emma. As soon as the words left her mouth, Melissa continued with a triumphant laugh, "Evan was with you for eleven years, so what? A person has more than one decade in their life. I know I can't compete with you right now, but what about the baby in my belly?"
