Nathan had been waiting in his office for a while.
The person who should have arrived long ago was still nowhere to be seen. Finishing up the last of his work, Nathan got up and left his office.
As soon as he stepped into the hallway, he saw Emma standing in the distance, her back to him.
She stood there alone as people bustled around her. Many cast curious glances her way, but she seemed completely oblivious, her gaze fixed on something in front of her.
Curious, Nathan walked over. As he got closer, he realized the woman's face was streaked with tears.
Her expression was one of extreme anguish and regret. Her eyes were red-rimmed, but when she saw him approach, she remained silent.
"What's wrong?"
Seeing Emma like this, Nathan couldn't help but worry.
She didn't answer him. Left with no choice, Nathan took her by the wrist and gently led her back to his office.
Emma didn't know why she was crying. Maybe she was thinking about the baby she had lost, mourning its brief existence. She had never loved Evan, but she had truly loved the child in her womb, the one that had been with her for less than three months.
Nathan poured a glass of warm water and placed it in her hands.
He sat beside her, saying nothing, just keeping her company in silence.
Once she had cried herself out, he asked softly, "What happened out there?"
Emma lowered her head, then shook it slightly. "It's... it's nothing…"
She had no intention of telling Nathan about her encounter with Melissa. She felt it was her own problem, had nothing to do with him, and didn't want to burden him with any negativity or trouble.
Seeing that she was unwilling to talk, Nathan didn't press her. He just offered a quiet word of comfort. "It's okay. Emotional fluctuations are very normal in the later stages of chemotherapy."
