From Ashes of Scandals to His Embrace novel Chapter 425

When Laurinda heard that Adolphus was hurt, panic shot through her. She jumped up from her chair, her voice trembling. “He’s hurt? Why didn’t anyone tell me?”

“Adolphus made us promise not to tell you before he passed out...” Egan’s voice was uneasy. He’d thought about reaching out, but everything was a mess. He was afraid Laurinda would get caught up in the chaos, so he kept quiet.

Laurinda swallowed her anger, reminding herself this wasn’t the time to point fingers. She took a steadying breath. “Do whatever it takes to keep Adolphus there. I’m booking a ticket right now.”

“Laurinda, that won’t work. He’s insisting on coming home. Why don’t you just wait for him here?” Egan tried to reason with her, sounding almost like he was pleading. With Adolphus set on leaving and Laurinda determined to come, he had no idea whose side to take. After thinking it over, he figured sending Adolphus home was safer since the hospitals there were better.

Laurinda understood what Egan was getting at. She took another deep breath, trying to sound as calm as possible. “Is everything over there actually under control?”

Egan wasn’t sure why she was asking, but he answered honestly. “Not yet. I can have someone take Adolphus back first, and I’ll stay and finish things up here.”

“Are you sure he’s okay to fly for that long?” Laurinda felt her head pounding. How could they send Adolphus home before things were resolved? Who could guarantee nothing would happen on the way? If he’d already been targeted, what made them think those people would just let him go?

Egan went quiet, realizing what she meant. The doctors didn’t want Adolphus to leave yet. Air travel would only make things worse for him.

Laurinda guessed from his silence that he was thinking it over. She didn’t wait for him to answer. “Forget it. I’ll talk to Adolphus myself. You just make sure he’s safe. I’ll handle the rest when I get there.”

She hung up and collapsed onto the sofa, then quickly dialed Adolphus’s video number. The call rang for ages before he finally picked up.
