“I heard Laurinda took Taylor. Weren’t we all in agreement? She joins the special zone, we keep the peace. So what is she up to now?”
The three of them talked over each other, tossing out questions. Lamont’s stomach throbbed in pain, and he wondered if Laurinda’s kick had actually rearranged his organs.
He sank into his office chair, looking at the three men whose faces were tight with worry. His voice came out weak. “She’s here because of Mr. Lane from Frostford.”
Lamont rubbed his temples, letting out a slow breath. “Don’t stress about it. This shouldn’t affect you. The real issue is Taylor. She stole Mr. Lane’s shipment and even hurt him. And, by the way, she and Mr. Lane are together. Like, really together.”
That shut everyone up. The room went dead quiet. You could hear every breath.
They all knew Laurinda’s background, and they’d pretty much figured out who Adolphus really was. The two of them teaming up—what were they planning? Was Mistfall Atoll about to get flipped upside down?
“You’re sure they’re a couple?”
“Absolutely. Someone close to Laurinda told me.”
Thinking about the info he’d gotten from York, Lamont regretted ever getting mixed up in this drama.
He remembered seeing Laurinda at the Riley Estate. Honestly, the fact that she didn’t kill Taylor on the spot was practically a miracle.
“Look, just stay out of her way and she won’t bother you. If you don’t have anything else, you can go. Laurinda’s got her hands full right now. She doesn’t have time for anyone else.”
And it was true. Laurinda barely had a minute to herself. She spent every day at Adolphus’s bedside, handling everything personally, waiting for him to wake up, hoping she’d be the first thing he saw when he opened his eyes.
