From Ashes of Scandals to His Embrace novel Chapter 439

"Take it. Now that you’re officially set up in the core district, Mistfall Atoll recognizes you. Things will be much smoother for you from here on out. Just think of it as a little interest. The rest, we’ll talk about once Adolphus wakes up."

Egan tightened his grip on the folder. After everything they’d been through these past weeks, this piece of land felt less like a reward and more like a consolation prize.

"Laurinda…"

Laurinda didn’t let him finish. She knew exactly why she was pushing for peace.

"I get what you’re thinking, but my priority is getting Adolphus out of here in one piece. That means making things right with them, at least for now. When Adolphus is better, if he wants to turn Mistfall Atoll upside down, I’ll back him up all the way."

She’d thought it all through. Accepting Lamont’s offer was the safest move. If they tried to leave on bad terms, who knew what the other side might do? They could mess with their plane or worse. If there wasn’t a truce, the only other option was to take out the threat completely.

Egan understood her logic. He nodded. "I’ll tell Foley and the others to stand down, and I’ll get the core district paperwork sorted right away. That way, we can leave without any trouble."

"Good. Renata should be back soon. Let her go with you, she knows how things work around here."

Right as Laurinda finished, there was a knock on the door. Renata walked in, looking pleased with herself.

Laurinda could tell from her face that things had gone smoothly. She raised her eyebrows. "How’d it go?"

"No surprises at all. I handed the guy over to Kevin, and he’s got the family seal now. The rest is Riley family business, so I headed back."

"Perfect. Take Egan with you to handle the core district paperwork. I’m going back to the hospital. We should be able to fly home in the morning."

"Sure, there’s still time to get it done today."
