Laurinda held her bowl and chopsticks, giving Seraphina a gentle smile as she shook her head. “You really don’t have to come by every day,” she said. “You’ve got the birthday party to plan, and Arrow and York will be here soon. We’ll manage, I promise.”
Hearing that, Seraphina finally remembered the mountain of things she still needed to handle for the banquet. She shot Laurinda an apologetic look. “Honestly, as soon as I heard Adolphus wasn’t doing well, I totally panicked. I forgot all about the birthday plans. You’ll be there that day, right? I’ve already set aside a dress for you. For now, I’ll have to count on you to watch over Adolphus. After the party, I’ll come back and take over.”
There was a flicker of guilt in Seraphina’s eyes. Adolphus was family, and it felt wrong to leave everything to Laurinda, but at the moment, she had no other choice.
Laurinda nodded. “I’ll be there. He’s my boyfriend, so of course I’ll take care of him. But I want this to stay quiet. Only a few of us need to know about his injury. There’s no reason for word to spread any further.”
Seraphina didn’t really get why Laurinda wanted to keep it a secret, but she trusted her and nodded anyway. “Don’t worry. I haven’t told anyone, not even my parents.”
“Thank you, Seraphina.”
They exchanged a warm smile. Seraphina reached over to tuck a loose strand of Laurinda’s hair behind her ear, her voice soft. “Come on, eat something, and then try to get some real rest. Look at you, you have dark circles. You can’t take care of anyone if you don’t take care of yourself first. When Adolphus wakes up, he’ll be so worried if he sees you like this.”
Laurinda smiled, putting on a playful pout. “Well, maybe he should be a little worried, after what he’s put me through. He never thinks about the consequences, and look where it got him.”
