Laurinda sat quietly at Adolphus’s bedside, her fingers wrapped gently around his big hand. She wasn’t scared. She could wait. Deep down, she was certain Adolphus wouldn’t leave her. One day, he would open his eyes again.
“Balaam, I’ll need you to come by every day from now on to do the acupuncture for Adolphus. For now, let Sam take you home so you can get some rest.”
Laurinda noticed the way Balaam’s face had gone a little pale. She could only imagine how much energy that treatment must take, especially for someone his age. She didn’t want him to wear himself out.
Balaam pulled a handkerchief from his pocket and dabbed the sweat away from his brow. He looked worn out, but he didn’t argue.
“I’ll come back tomorrow,” he promised. “I’ll write up a prescription when I get home. Sam can pick up the herbs, and once it’s ready, he’ll bring it over. Try to get Adolphus to drink it. Don’t worry, Laurinda. I’ll do everything I can to help him recover.”
“Thank you. Really.”
Laurinda walked Balaam out, then slipped into the bathroom. She filled a basin with warm water and carried it back, setting it down by the bed. She dipped a cloth in and started to gently wipe Adolphus’s arms, his face, his neck. As she worked, she couldn’t help talking to him, half teasing, half serious.
“Look at you, just lying here like it’s no big deal. Do you have any idea what kind of mess you’ve left for me to handle? Your dad’s birthday is in less than a week. Who knows how many people are watching us, just waiting for a chance to pounce. You’re supposed to be the next head of the family, but if you’re not there, I’ll have to show up on my own. How could you leave me to deal with all of them by myself?”
She paused, letting out a long sigh, then tried to lighten her tone.
“Adolphus, I know you’re just tired. You just needed a real break. It’s okay. You sleep. Leave the rest to me. I’ll keep your place safe, I promise. The Lane family’s future is still yours, even if you’re not here right now. When you wake up, I’ll tell you everything that happened at the party. I won’t let you down. I promise.”
She leaned in closer, voice dropping to a whisper.
“Don’t make me wait too long, alright? You know I’m not that patient. When you’ve had enough rest, just wake up.”
