Laurinda handed her suitcase to the waiting servant and guided Seraphina, Egan, Sam, and the others through the courtyard. They’d barely set foot in the front yard when a chorus of surprised voices rose behind her. Laurinda couldn’t help but laugh. These guys had seen just about everything, or so she thought, so why were they acting so shocked?
“Seriously, is this really necessary?” she teased, glancing over her shoulder.
Sam shook his head, eyes wide. “You don’t get it, Laurinda. Do you know what this house means in Cabinda? It’s more than just a place to live—it’s a statement. Other than the royal gardens, the only estate bigger than this is The Lane Estate. After that, yours is probably the next most important.”
“Every one of the four big families in Cabinda has an ancestral house, but even my family’s isn’t as huge as yours,” another added.
Laurinda smiled at Sam’s dramatic tone but could tell he wasn’t exaggerating. Her father had told her all about the house’s storied history. With such a background, it wasn’t surprising they’d built something this grand.
“Alright, let’s stop with the house tour talk and get inside. It’s freezing out here,” Laurinda said, grabbing Seraphina’s arm and heading for the front door. Even though the days were warmer now, the nighttime chill still crept in, and she was dressed too lightly to risk catching a cold.
They entered the main hall, where Adolphus and Balaam were deep in conversation, both looking more serious than usual. Laurinda immediately worried something was up with Adolphus’s health.
“What are you two discussing? You look so serious. Did something happen with Adolphus?” she asked.
Adolphus looked over at her, his earlier irritation fading. He smiled gently. “Not me. It’s about medical research back home, nothing serious.”
He held his hand out without thinking. Laurinda slid her hand into his and settled comfortably next to him.
“Is there anything I can do to help?” she asked quietly.
