Laurinda sat next to Adolphus, instantly picking up on what he meant. With the way he was talking, anyone could tell he was poking fun at Seraphina. She reached over and gave him a gentle nudge, a clear signal for him to tone it down.
“What good friend are you talking about?” Seraphina asked.
“Magnolia,” Adolphus replied with a hint of amusement. “Wasn’t she your best friend? The one you guaranteed with your reputation…”
Before he could finish, Laurinda covered his mouth with her hand, refusing to let him drag out the conversation any further.
Adolphus just raised his brows, his eyes sparkling with mischief, then pressed a quick kiss to her palm.
It wasn’t until then that Seraphina realized he was teasing her. She felt a wave of embarrassment and frustration wash over her. Every word out of Adolphus’s mouth was something she had once said in Magnolia’s defense. Dropping her gaze, she didn’t dare look him in the eye. Her voice grew small as she muttered, “I was blind, alright? I totally misread her.”
Her quiet confession made Adolphus laugh. He tugged Laurinda’s hand away, still grinning. “You’ve picked the wrong people more than once, Seraphina. Good thing Kendrick’s willing to put up with you. Otherwise, who knows what kind of trouble you’d get into next? Most people get smarter with experience, but you just keep making the same mistakes.”
Seraphina’s cheeks flushed. “Hey, that’s not fair. I’m not that clueless! At least Magnolia never messed with my job.”
“You don’t need anyone to be gentle with you,” Adolphus shot back. “If I don’t give it to you straight, you’ll never see things clearly.”
Laurinda tugged at Adolphus’s sleeve, hoping he’d finally let it go.
He caught her hand, lacing their fingers together, and gave her a soft look. The playful comeback died on his lips.
Just as the moment settled, the butler stepped in to announce that dinner was ready and invited everyone into the dining room.
Laurinda’s face lit up. She was starving, and nothing sounded better than the food she’d been missing from home. She pulled Adolphus up, then walked over and stretched out her hand to Seraphina.
