Laurinda could tell from the way Adolphus spoke that whatever was in the box probably had something to do with her. What she didn't get was why something connected to her would end up with him in the first place.
Sitting up a little straighter, her eyes sparkling with curiosity, she looked at Adolphus. "What is it?"
"I'll show you," he said, already heading into the study. He came back after a moment, carrying a small wooden box and setting it right in front of her.
Laurinda eyed the box, her face twisting into a confused frown. It had that old-timey look she immediately distrusted. Something about it made her uneasy.
"Don't tell me you’ve started buying antiques now," she joked, trying to keep things light.
Honestly, she couldn’t blame herself for thinking that. Growing up, her dad was always coming home with boxes just like this one, all packed with random antiques he’d picked up. Most of them ended up squirreled away in that massive vault, and just the annual maintenance cost a small fortune.
Adolphus saw the way she hesitated and just chuckled, clearly not getting her aversion to antiques. "I wouldn’t call them antiques, really. I just picked up a few things at an auction. Go on, have a look."
He set the box in her lap. Hearing they were from an auction made her just a little more curious, so she opened it.
When she saw the jewelry inside, her eyebrows pulled together. She recognized the blue diamond necklace right away—the Devil's Eye.
"How on earth did these end up here?"
"Aiken’s driver was trying to sell them," Adolphus explained.
He didn’t need to say more. Laurinda got the picture. She let out a short, bitter laugh. "I’ve had so much going on, I almost forgot about all this. Well, the things are back. What about the people responsible?"
