“I was just wondering, do you think he went after Leon because of that girl Leon framed? Did you guys notice? As soon as she left, he followed her out. When he came back, he just went straight for Leon...”
Tania’s words faded and she fell silent, suddenly realizing Laurinda was watching her. Tania managed a sheepish grin, feeling all kinds of awkward.
It had been embarrassing enough when they’d all believed Leon’s lies about Laurinda, but now Laurinda had caught them gossiping for no reason. The secondhand embarrassment was so strong, she wanted the ground to swallow her up.
The other two picked up on Tania’s discomfort and turned to see what got her rattled. When they spotted Laurinda, their faces turned stiff, like they weren’t sure if they should say hi or just pretend they hadn’t seen her.
Laurinda’s eyes were bright and her tone almost playful. “Why’d you all go quiet? I was really getting into the story.”
All three ducked their heads automatically. Tania glanced at Laurinda, full of guilt.
“Sorry, we really didn’t mean to pull you into this. It’s just, Lucas suddenly punched Leon out of nowhere, but there was never any bad blood between them. So…”
“So you just assumed Lucas beat him up because of me?” Laurinda’s voice was so relaxed, it was hard to tell how she felt, but anyone who truly knew her could hear she wasn’t happy.
All three of them just stood there, completely lost. They were about to apologize when Laurinda spoke again. “Honestly, your guess wasn’t wrong. Lucas did it because of me. So, here’s a heads up. Next time you want to talk about me, maybe make sure I’m not around. And make sure he’s not around either. He’s a bit wild, but honestly, I’m probably worse.”
Laurinda didn’t even wait for their reaction. She stood up, drummed her fingers on the table, and looked at Adolphus. “Let’s get out of here. Movie time.”
Adolphus got to his feet right away, picking up Laurinda’s bag with one hand and taking her hand with the other. He glanced over at the three, his expression unreadable, then headed out with Laurinda.
