Shirley was a total foodie and never forgot these details. If she said it, it was probably true.

“Has the owner always been the same lady?”

“Yeah, she’s been here since the beginning. She’s super friendly.” Shirley answered right away. She always liked the owner. Every time she and Laurinda came in, the owner would bring out some free samples of whatever new dishes she was trying out.

Laurinda could tell Adolphus had a reason for his question. She felt a flicker of concern and asked, “Is something up? Did you notice anything weird?”

“Just feels a little strange. When she found out I was your boyfriend, her face got kind of stiff. Like she was caught off guard.”

“Maybe you’re just overthinking it.” Laurinda had seen the owner tons of times and never noticed anything strange before.

“Maybe,” Adolphus said, letting it go. “So, what do we want to do after dinner? Want to catch a movie?”

Just hearing the word movie made Shirley perk up. She looked at Laurinda with big, hopeful eyes. Laurinda didn’t want to disappoint her, so she nodded.

“Sure, let’s go see a movie before heading home. Our flight is in the morning, right?”
