Adolphus shifted his eyes away and followed Laurinda out of the restaurant, pretending nothing was amiss.
Since Laurinda liked the place, he decided there was no need to get rid of the owner—so long as she meant no harm to Laurinda.
Elsewhere, Kenny hung up on Una. Overcome with rage, he completely lost control, smashing everything within arm’s reach. He was sick of the helplessness that had taken over his life. There was nothing he could do—even approaching Laurinda felt like an unattainable luxury.
His trusted men, stationed outside the hospital room, heard the commotion and burst in. Taking in the chaos, they hurried over, concern etched on their faces.
“Sir, what happened?”
“I’m fine,” Kenny snapped, his eyes bloodshot with fury. Only one thought burned in his mind—revenge. He wanted the Austins to pay, to suffer as much as he did. “What are that old man from the Austins and the fake heiress up to?”
“Baily’s been lying low, keeping mostly to himself, and making regular trips to the lab. As for their so-called heiress, she’s become quite the sensation among high society lately—been rubbing elbows with all the big-name socialites. There are even rumors that several prominent families are looking to marry her into their ranks for a strategic foothold.”
At the mention of a marriage alliance, Kenny let out a cold, derisive laugh. Were those pampered society dames so blinded by the Austin name that they couldn’t tell the real deal from a fraud? Or did the family’s status matter more than anything else?
“Spread the news about Laura’s abortion back home,” he ordered with a sneer. “Let’s see which of them still wants to bring her into their family.”
It was a vicious move that would torpedo the reputation Laura was just beginning to build in Stonehaven.
“Sir, if the Austins find out, they’ll come after you again,” his man ventured, hesitant. Lately, cracks had formed in Kenny’s relationship with the Austin family. Baily had begun to realize Kenny wasn’t on his side anymore, always looking for an excuse to kick Kenny out of his position.
“Retaliate? Against me, or the guy in Frostford? That’s not your concern. Just do your job.”
With that, Kenny dismissed his man. To him, this strike against the Austins was just a appetizer—soon, he’d make sure they never had another peaceful night’s sleep.
At the airport, Laurinda and Adolphus disembarked with their entourage. Taking the car keys from Arrow, Adolphus drove off with Laurinda and Irvin.
Meanwhile, Shirley and Foley headed directly to Laurinda’s house. Shirley’s father had been called away unexpectedly on business that morning, so until her mother arrived, she’d be staying with Laurinda.
Adolphus pulled up outside the Main family estate. Hearing the car outside, the butler rushed out. He did a double take when he saw Adolphus and Laurinda stepping out—clearly, he hadn’t expected to see them.
