As I left Myron’s office, I couldn't shake the image of his expression after my answer. He seemed surprised, his face thoughtful and devoid of any pleasure.
I didn't have the energy to dwell on his true intentions. Back at my desk, I started discussing the proposal with Jacob.
His eyes went wide. “Zephyra, the proposal was approved?”
I nodded.
He practically jumped out of his chair, overjoyed. “Zephyra, I’ve been an intern here for two months, and this is the first real project I’ve been a part of that got approved!”
Seeing his eyes well up, I patted his shoulder. In a large corporation like this, a newcomer like him without connections or outstanding skills could easily be sidelined. I’d heard that before I brought him onto my team, he was stuck doing menial tasks, mostly fetching coffee.
I smiled encouragingly. “You did great. Let’s keep it up.”
Jacob nodded eagerly, his eyes filled with gratitude. “Thank you, Zephyra. You’ve really been my guardian angel. I promise I’ll work hard and learn everything I can!”
“Good.” I smiled back and opened the file to go over the specifics. Jacob was a novice, but he was smart and full of energy. He caught on to everything I said, and honestly, we worked well together.
It was just a shame he was Verna’s boyfriend. Our working relationship was getting better and better, but I dreaded the day Steven would inevitably try to steal her away. I had no idea how I would face him then…
After work, I headed straight for the hospital, stopping on the way to buy some grapes that I knew both Uncle Julian and Horace Spencer liked.
I walked into the room and found Horace gently massaging Julian Lopez’s legs. They were chatting and laughing, the atmosphere light and cheerful.
My eyes widened in surprise.
Ever since I’d known him, Uncle Julian had been unable to walk properly and seemed to hate anyone touching his legs. I’d never asked about it, respecting his privacy. I couldn’t believe he was letting Horace massage them.
How did they get so close overnight?
